Elgin Annexation |
|
| |
This is where
it all began. In the fall of 2004 it was learned that the City of Elgin announced it was
annexing land in northern Campton & southern Plato
Townships, a group of local residents of heard the of this
new residential development coming they quickly gathered and
formed the NFP organization called Preserve Campton. The City of Elgin was annexing 778 acres of land in northern Campton & southern Plato Townships
for high density residential developments from a
national tract home builder
Ryland Homes. The plan was for houses, townhouses and a commercial area the same
size of 6 large building stores. This area was never designated in Elgin's Comprehensive
Plan for future development by the city at all.
In addition the Kane
County 2030 Plan shows this area should be developed as low
density residential housing, one house per four
acres because of the wetlands, endangered plants
and soil conditions of this area.
The plan Elgin was proposing was a high density housing
development with
four houses per acre
with a total of 940 homes.
In addition all of this development will surround the
Corron Open Space property. The property that ALL OF
US RESIDENTS living in Campton Township bought with
our tax dollars to keep open and be able to enjoy in the
future. Their plan is to build large commercial
buildings right next to the property.
How can a municipality like the City of Elgin
come in, annex the
land and change all the zoning
ordinances to high density housing and commercial property
and disregard any of the local residents, school
districts and the township governments voices. Well, in
Illinois a municipality has the power to do this, and
supersedes any of the County & Township zoning regulations. |
